Abstract

Objectives: Analyze the impact of the primary treatment on the oncological outcomes of the patients with supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma T1/T2N0 (SSCCT1/T2N0).

Design: Retrospective study.

Materials and methods: Revision of clinical records of the patients diagnosed with SSCCT1/T2N0 in an ENT Department of a portuguese oncological hospital between 01-01-2005 and 31-12-2014. Only the patients treated by partial laryngectomy or definitive radiotherapy (dRT) were included. The exclusion criteria were patients with synchronous head and neck tumors or previous history of larynx carcinoma.

To compare the oncological results, the patients treated with combination of surgery and radiotherapy were excluded. The patients were separated in two study groups: surgical group and dRT group.

Results: The surgical group achieved a higher total survival, but a lower disease-specific survival, compared to the dRT group.

Conclusions: Comparing the surgical group and the dRT group, no statistically significant difference was found in relation to survival.
