Time of exclusive nasal respiration and quality of life related with nasal obstruction

Objectives: To investigate whether there is a correlation between the time of exclusive nasal breathing (TENB), with no disconfort for the patient, and the NOSE (Nasal Symptom Evaluation Obtruction) scale results, before and after septoplasty with or without turbinectomy.
Study Design: Prospective observational study. Methods: Patients with nasal septal deviation completed the NOSE scale and performed de TENB test before and 1, 3 and 6 months after septoplasty, with or without bilateral reduction of the inferior turbinates.
Results: Fifty-seven patients underwent surgery. There was an improvement in the mean NOSE score at 1 month after septoplasty (57.2 vs. 15.9, p <0.0001) and remained at 3 and 6 months of follow-up. Evaluating the mean NOSE scores in TENB groups, either before (0-30s/69, 6; 30-60s/50, 5;> 60s/40, 0, p <0.0001) or one month after surgery (30- 60s/37, 5;> 60s/12.5, p <0.0001) were obtained statistically significant differences, which also occurred at 3 and 6 months of follow-up.
Conclusions: The TENB it is a simple, fast and cheap test, which results are related to the NOSE scores, before and after septoplasty, therefore constitutes a promising measure in evaluating the quality of life related to nasal obstruction.
