Abstract

Objectives: The treatment of the laryngeal cancer aims to
control the disease and preserve both the laryngeal structure
and functions whenever possible. The purpose of our study was
to determine whether external partial laryngectomy keeps its
place in the panorama of the current oncologic therapeutic
options.

Study design: Patients who underwent open partial laryngeal
surgery in Oporto Oncologic Institute were studied from 1st
January 1998 to 31st December 2010.

Methods: The medical records were reviewed, looking
for oncologic and functional aspects. Survival rates were
calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method.

Results: Oncologic and functional outcomes of our patients
are consistent with the favorable results reported across the
world.

Conclusions: The treatment of laryngeal cancer should be
individualized according to factors related to the tumor, the
patient and surgeon. External partial laryngectomy in selected
cases allows good functional and oncologic results in patients
with laryngeal tumors.
