Abstract

Objectives: (1) identify the degree and type of voice disorder; (2) to determine the acoustic parameters values; (3) to assess the relationship between perceptual evaluation and the different voice parameters.

Methods: 15 adult women, with vocal nodules diagnosis, performed a vocal perceptual evaluation through the use of GRBAS scale and an acoustic analysis, through the software program Praat, of /a/, /i / and /u/ vowels, reading with a support sentence and conversation.

Results: (1) The severity of dysphonia raged from mild (40%) and moderate (53%). The identified type of dysphonia was mild hoarseness (40%) and moderate (53%) with characteristics of mild breathiness (87%); (2) the average values of Fo are within the range considered normal for reading, as well as the values of Jitter PPQ5 which are considered normal for reading and conversation. Shimmer APQ3 and HNR revealed pathological values in terms of reading and conversation. (3) The severity of dysphonia was correlated negatively with fundamental frequency (Fo) and HNR and positively with Shimmer APQ3 and Jitter PPQ5. Hoarseness was correlated negatively with HNR and positively with Shimmer APQ3 and Jitter PPQ5 and Breathiness positively with Jitter PPQ5.

Conclusion: This study contributed to a deeper understanding of voice quality in women with vocal nodules and to demonstrate the importance of the use of a multidimensional assessment of voice.
