Abstract

Aim: To identify factors of prognosis of vestibular rehabilitation (VR) in patients with chronic unilateral vestibular hypofunction (CUVH).

Study Design: Retrospective study of the charts of the patients diagnosed with CUVH, who underwent VR.

Material and methods: We recorded epidemiological and clinical data, the results of posturography and dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) tests, before and after VR, and investigated a relationship between these data and test results.

Results: We registered 71 patients, most with 2 to 3 comorbidities. We found a significant increase in vestibular scores and posturography stability rates and a significant reduction in DHI scores after VR. Obese patients presented decreased somatosensory scores and increased visual dependence and patients medicated with ototoxic drugs presented an increase in the posturography stability rate significantly lower than other patients did.

Conclusions: Patients with obesity or medicated with ototoxic drugs present worse results after VR. Despite multiple comorbidities, the VR program was mostly effective.
