Vocal cordectomy: Results and predictors of recurrence and survival

Objectives: Evaluation of a population that underwent vocal cordectomy with Laser CO2.
Study design: Retrospective cohort.
Material and Methods: Analysis of the patients with early glottic squamous cell carcinoma who underwent vocal cordectomy during a 7 year period.
Results: 48 patients were included. The recurrence rate was 27.1%. A second primary tumor was diagnosed in 20.8% of patients. Positive margins were the only significant prognostic factor for recurrence. The presence of a second primary tumor was the only factor that was significantly associated with survival.
Conclusions: Vocal cordectomy with Laser CO2 is a minimally invasive surgery that is effective in treating early glottic carcinomas. Positive margins of the lesion proved to be a significant factor of recurrence, indicating the risk of persistence of the neoplasia. As they influence survival, there must be a high index of suspicion for the diagnosis of second primary tumors.
