Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the feasibility of submandibular gland (SMG) sparing during surgical treatment with neck dissection in patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC).

Study design: Retrospective study.

Material & methods: The clinical records of patients with OCSCC who underwent surgical treatment between 2010 and 2016 were reviewed and it was compared the survival time and tumor recurrence between those patients in whom the gland was preserved (n=26) versus those in which it was excised (n=51).

Results: There was no statistical difference in the survival (p=0,121) or recurrence rate (p=0,475) between both groups.

Conclusions: The SMG excision doesn’t seem to compromise survival time and recurrence rate in these patients. This suggests that it might be feasible to preserve the gland, considering the patient doesn’t present advanced tumor stage or clinical evidence of SMG invasion. Therefore, we can avoid possible complications of SMG removal with compromise in the quality of patients’ life.
