Abstract

Introduction: Endoscopic sinus surgery in children has restricted and specific indications, it is recommended in cases of failure of medical management for chronic rhinosinusitis or recurrent acute rhinosinusitis, complications of acute sinusitis, antrochoanal polyps and certain neoplasms.

Material and Methods: Retrospective study that included children undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery between 2010 and 2014 in order to define the population, characterize the pathology and describe our experience in surgical treatment.

Results: The sample population was 23 patients, 87% were male, with an average age of 10 years. 14 children had complications of acute rhinosinusitis, 7 chronic rhinosinusitis, 1 cystic fibrosis with obstructive nasal polyposis and 1 antrochoanal polyp. Three patients required revision surgery.

Conclusion: Surgical decision should be individualized and based on specific criteria. A conservative approach is recommended is this age group as a safe and effective procedure.
