Objective: analyze the recent experience in stapes surgery of Hospital Professor Doutor Fernando Fonseca through the evaluation of its audiometric results.
Materials and methods: retrospective evaluation of clinical records concerning 155 consecutive stapes surgeries performed in Hospital Professor Doutor Fernando Fonseca between January 2006 and December 2010.
Results: the mean age was 43,6 years. The mean 4-frequency (0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz) postoperative air-bone gap was 5,2 dB. The mean hearing gain obtained was 27 dB and the surgical success rate was 88,2%.The bone conduction variation in high frequencies was 4,9 dB.
Conclusion: stapes surgery has a high success rate and a low complication rate, and is a preferential treatment for otosclerosis. Our results confirm that tendency, supporting the use of stapes surgery in Hospital Professor Doutor Fernando Fonseca.
