Abstract

Objectives: Review medical literature with regard to the application of mitomycin-C in the area of Rhinology

Methods: Search in PubMed. We present, briefly, a clinical case occurred at ENT-HNS Service, Hospital Garcia de Orta in which the Mitomycin-C was used as an adjunct to surgical correction of unilateral choanal atresia.

Results: Mitomycin-C is an anti-proliferative agent which inhibits growth and fibroblast proliferation. The success of its use in the prevention of granulation tissue and scar formation in ophthalmic surgery stimulated its employ in the various fields of Otorhinolaryngology.

Conclusions: In the context of Rhinology, Mitomycin-C seems to have proven benefit when implemented in endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy and to be promising in the prevention of adhesions after functional endoscopic sinus surgery with the aim of extending the natural ostia. At the level of surgical correction of choanal atresia there is lack of scientific evidence to support its routine use.
