Abstract

The presence of concomitant nasal disease in the preoperative evaluation of chronic otitis media sugery raises some issues in terms of surgical decision. Empirically a transient tubal dysfunction can result from nasal surgery and it may be associated with failure of tymplanoplasty. This study aims to evaluate the success of tympanoplasty in patients receiving both nasal and tympanomastoidectomy surgery. Retrospective analysis of 6 patients who had undergone simultaneous nasal surgery and tympanoplastic surgery. The overall success rate of tympanic graft and aeration of the middle ear was 83.3%. All patients presented a decrease of the air-bone gap (ABG) with tympanoplasty. The average ABG postoperatively was 23.2 dB. The findings are consistent with the rates described in other studies for tympanoplasty without simultaneous nasal surgery. Our results suggest that concomitant nasal surgery do not impairs the success of tympanoplasty.
