Abstract

Objective: description and discussion of the management of fronto-ethmoidal mucoceles treated in the ENT department of Hospital de Braga between 2012 and 2017.

Study design: descriptive observational study Material and methods: retrospective analysis of a case series of fronto-ethmoidal mucoceles.

Results: the population consisted of 18 patients. The majority were male, with mean age of 47 years old. The most common complaint was periorbital swelling (frontal or inner cantus). 20% had history of major maxillo-facial trauma, and other 20% had history of nasal surgery. Most of the patients were treated by endoscopic sinus surgery. A cerebrospinal fluid leak was registered in a patient treated by an external approach. The mean follow-up was of 46 months, with no relapses.

Conclusion and discussion: fronto-ethmoidal mucoceles with bone erosion and orbital or cerebral mass effect can by treated by endoscopic, external or combined approach. The choice between the different techniques depends on the exact location, existence of risk factors and associated morbidities. Given that, the treatment of this entity is still a challenge for the ENT surgeon.
