Abstract

Introduction: Pneumolabyrinth is an extremely rare entity. Its diagnosis is made by the recognition of an air bubble in the vestibule, semicircle canals and/or cochlea. It is a radiological sign of perilymphatic fistula. Probably due to its rarity, diagnosis and treatment protocols are lacking.

Methods and materials: Report of two cases of traumatic pneumolabyrinth. Literature review with search on PubMed and Google Schoolar, with the following keywords: “pneumolabirinth”, “pneumocochlea” e “pneumovestibule”.

Results: Both case reports of pneumolabyrinth were treated with medical treatment alone, with favorable results. The authors propose a treatment protocol for diagnosis and management of traumatic pneumolabyrinth.

Conclusion: In most cases of traumatic pneumolabyrinth, the initial option for medical treatment seems to be valid. The treatment guidelines proposed by the authors allows for the uniformization of traumatic pneumolabyrinth treatment, based on existing scientific evidence.
