Abstract

Aims: Evaluation of patients undergoing total glossectomy (GT).

Material and Methods: Retrospective study that included patients undergoing GT between 2009 and 2018 at the Otorhinolaryngology Service of IPOLFG.

Results: 27 patients were included. The vast majority of patients (78%) had advanced tumor (stage IV). GT was performed as a salvage treatment in 56% of cases. The reconstruction was mostly performed using a pectoralis major flap (59%). 93% of patients were laryngectomized. 30% of patients achieved adequate swallowing function. In the mean follow-up period of 21 months, 14 (52%) patients relapsed. One- and 5-year survival rates were 52% and 22%.

Conclusions: GT was mostly performed in cases of disease recurrence after an organ preservation protocol. It has an impact on quality of life by affecting both swallowing and speech. These patients have high locoregional recurrence and low survival rate, but it is an important option when therapeutic alternatives are limited.
