Abstract

Complex head and neck defects frequently result from cancer resection or major trauma. Free flaps are usually used for reconstruction of these defects. Regional flaps are useful especially in patients with low performance status.

We present two clinical cases for the reconstruction of complex defects of the preauricular region after the resection of malignant skin tumors with transposition temporal muscle flaps grafted with a partial-thickness skin graft.

The flap survival was 100% and the graft-take was complete. There was neuropraxia of the facial nerve in one patient, as a result of facial nerve dissection for tumor resection, resolved in two months. It was not possible to maintain external auditory canal permeability. The functional and aesthetic results were good.

Temporal muscle flap is an excellent alternative to free flaps for the reconstruction of complex defects in the head and neck
