Abstract

The nasolacrimal duct obstruction affects about 20% newborns. Most cases have a spontaneous resolution in the first year of life. Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is indicated when symptoms reoccur after conservative treatment.

This retrospective study included 10 patients, from January 2015 to December 2019. Epiphora was the most frequent symptom (70%, n=7). Lacrimal stents were placed in 60% (n=6), with no intraoperative complications. There were 3 accidental extrusions, with an average stent stay of 5,6 months in the remaining patients. Surgical success was achieved in 100% of cases, with an average follow-up of 7 months.

DCR is a simple surgical procedure with a low rate of complications. At pediatric age, it presents anatomical constraints with the need to adapt the endoscopic technique along a minimally invasive approach. The cooperation between Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology is essential for the multidisciplinary treatment of these patients.
