Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between Chronic Rhinosinusitis (CRS) and lower airway disease (LAD) in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients.

Material and Methods: Retrospective study of CF patients observed between January 2010 and December 2019 in our department. Lung function tests parameters, image studies, need for lung transplantation, colonization and hospitalization rates were collected and its association with the presence and severity of CRS was assessed.

Results: 44 patients with mean aged 14.7 ±1.23 years old were analyzed. 59.1% had CRS, presenting a mean Lund-Mackay score of 8.38 (±6.4). CRS was associated with increased need for lung transplantation (p=0.04) and these patients presented a higher Lund-Mackay score (14.9±5.8 vs. 7.8±5.1, p=0.012). CRS did not influence lung function tests results.

Conclusions: Sinus disease may influence lower airway disease prognosis in CF patients.
