Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the success of Wullstein type 1 tympanoplasty in pediatric patients and to evaluate the prognostic factors.

Study Design: retrospective cohort study.

Material and Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 48 children who underwent tympanoplasty at the CHEDV between 2015 and 2018. The outcome measures were graft success after 6 months, audiometric gain and a air-filled space in the middle ear.

Results: The graft success rate was 79.2%, and achievement of all outcomes was possible in 55% of the ears. The success of the graft was negatively affected by the status of the contralateral ear. However, other prognostic factors such as age, previous adenoidectomy, size, location and cause of perforation had no impact.

Conclusion: In pediatric patients tympanoplasty has worse results than in adults, when compared to the previous literature, and seems to be influenced by the state of the contralateral ear.
