Malignant Neoplasies diagnosed during the year 2011 e the Department of ENT of the HSM

Two hundred thousand new head and neck cancers are diagnosed worldwide yearly. In Portugal this cancer is on the top ten most common tumors.
Objective: Describe the epidemiological and clinical aspects of the new cases of cancer diagnosed at the ENT department of HSM, during the year 2011.
Materials and Methods: The following variables were analyzed: sex, age, time between first symptoms and ORL appointment, symptoms, comorbidities, referral project, diagnosis date, primary tumor location, specific location, smoking and alcoholic habits, staging, proposed treatment, time between diagnosis and first treatment, date and cause of death.
Results: During the year 2011, 96 new cases of cancer were diagnosed, 84% in men and 16% in women. The most common primary site was the Larynx (39,5%), followed by the oropharynx and hypopharynx. Histologically 74,4% were squamous cell carcinoma. Most patients were alcoholics and smokers.
Conclusion: In this study the authors aim to create a profile of the patients with diagnosis of head and neck carcinoma.
