Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the incidence of the various laryngeal lesions in children with vocal complaints, observed in the consultation of Phoniatrics of the Service of Otorhinolaryngology of the Oporto Hospital Center.

Materials and Methods: Retrospective study of clinical processes of children with dysphonia, evaluated at the Oporto Hospital Center between 2001 and 2015.

Results: 60 children were identified with complaints of dysphonia, aged between 5 and 17 years (average 9.9 years). 37 children (62%) were males. The main diagnoses were: 45 cases of vocal cord nodules (75%), 6 cases of vocal cord cyst and 3 cases of unilateral vocal cord paresis.

Conclusions: Nodules of the vocal cords were the main cause of dysphonia in the children evaluated, being more frequent in the male sex. In these cases speech therapy was the treatment of choice with positive results.
