Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical results of larynx carcinoma (CL) treatment and the prognostic factors.

Methods: It was evaluated 137 patients followed at the Otorhinolaryngology Service of the Centro Hospitalar de São João (CHSJ), with CL diagnosis, between 2004 and 2010.

Results: Patients' 5-year survival was 44.5%. Patients with a T1 carcinoma, submitted to surgery (CX), had a 5-year survival of 100%. Patients with a T4 carcinoma, submitted to CX + RT, had a 5-year survival of 39.1%. When submitted to QT+RT, 5-year survival was 13%. QT+RT treatment allowed that this patients didn’t present laryngeal dysfunction after treatment.

Conclusions: Tumor staging and therapeutic modality were prognostic factors. In selected patients, QT+RT treatment could allow satisfactory cure rates, with better functional results than surgery.
