Objectives: Larynx trauma is rare and their approach is a challenge. This paper aims to review and share our experience with this kind of trauma.
Study Design, Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of cases of laryngeal trauma with cartilage fracture and / or laryngotomy, evaluated in the Emergency Room of Centro X, between January 2004 and October 2014.
Results: 9 cases were found with laryngeal fracture and / or laryngotomy. There were performed different surgical techniques like reduction of fractures and fixation with osteosynthesis plates, endolaryngeal stents placement, cricothyroidopexy and a supracricoid laryngectomy with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy. Better outcomes in terms of decannulation, vocal quality and swallowing ability were achieved mainly in patients submitted to an earlier intervention.
Conclusions: An early and appropriate intervention is crucial to a better recovery of laryngeal function.
