Abstract

Objectives – To present a successful case of a young female patient who underwent surgical reconstruction because of open laryngeal stab wound.

Study design – Clinical case.

Materials and Methods – Case report of a female patient, aged 25, who had a stab wound that transected the larynx, about 3 mm above the glottis. Meticulous laryngeal surgical reconstruction was executed. The pertinent literature about open laryngeal trauma surgical treatment is reviewed.

Results - Postoperative course was favorable. The patient started oral feeding 10 days after surgery and tracheotomy cannula was removed 14 days after surgery without incidents. At the time of clinical discharge the patient showed no dyspnea, had a subtle liquids aspiration and mild dysphonia. After 1 year, the patient had no limitations (no dyspnea, dysphonia or aspiration).

Conclusions - The first choice treatment in extended open wounds of the larynx is surgical reconstruction. The case report treatment was successful.
