Background: Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is currently the gold-standard approach to Sinonasal Inverted Papillomas (IP). The preoperative determination of the implantation base of the neoplasm may be relevant in defining the surgical approach.
The objectives of this study were to update the authors’ experience in the management of IP and try to determine the role of computerized tomography (CT) in preoperative planning.
Methods: Retrospective study of patients treated in a Department of Otolaryngology by IP between September 2001 and September 2011, with review of pre-operative CT.
Results: 17 patients were treated by FESS. The recurrence rate was 16.6%. The positive predictive value of preoperative CT in patients with suspected mass lesions was 80%.
Conclusions: The recurrence rate is similar to that found in the literature. In surgical planning for these patients a prior biopsy of suspicious lesions is fundamental and the evaluation of CT is very important to try to predict the tumour implantation.
