Hearing loss and meadle ear status in children with cleft palate, 3 to 4 years-old

Introduction: Cleft palate (CP) patients have a high prevalence of middle ear disease. The present study aims to identify and characterize auditory pathology in CP children during their first 3-4 years of life.
Methods: A retrospective study was performed analyzing the audiologic characteristics of 27 infants followed by the lip and/or palate cleft multidisciplinary team of Centro Hospitalar de São João.
Results: About 55% of children did not pass neonatal screening. The medium time between first VT insertion and their extrusion was 11.3 months. Auditory evoked potentials before and after VT revealed a hearing threshold of 53dB and 39dB, respectively. Only 4 children never inserted VT. Recurrent middle ear discharge was present in 4 ears. During data collection (February 2012), only 8% of infants had a normal otoscopy.
Conclusions: Cleft palate children have a high prevalence of hearing impairment. Few complications regarding VT use were observed and auditory gain was significant.
