Abstract

Hamartomas are benign lesions resulting from an aberrant differentiation which produce a mass of mature and specialized cells resembling those found in the tissue of origin but with a disorganized architecture. Besides their tendency to originate in lung, liver or spleen, uncommon localizations in the superior aerodigestive tract have been reported. Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma is a rare lesion which pathogeny remains unknown. They occur in the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx predominantly affecting males in the third to ninth decades of life. The clinical presentation is the same of benign nasosinusal tumours, having an indolent progression. Diagnosis arrives as a biopsy and histological examination findings The preferred treatment is surgical excision usually with an excellent prognosis. We present a case of a 62-year-old male patient with complaints of insidious and progressive left nasal obstruction sensation. The physical examination showed a polypoid masse occupying the totality of left nasal cavity. The computerized tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance showed soft tissue mass in the left nasal cavity. The patient underwent functional sinus surgery with lesion excision. The histological examination reveals the presence of a respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma.
