Abstract

The adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is the most frequent malignant tumor of the minor salivary glands, and due to their paucity in the larynx, it is responsible for less than 0,2% of the tumors at this site. In the larynx, it is most frequently observed in the sub-glottis, having it´s symptoms late onset. These include stridor, dyspnoea, coughing and obstruction of the airway. A 50 year old woman was diagnosed with ACC in the sub-glottis region, whose first symptom was progressive dyspnea. Since there was a poor response to treatment, a bronchofibroscopy was performed and a sub-glottic formation discovered. A biopsy was executed, having diagnosed a ACC of the cribriform subtype. She was submitted to a total laryngectomy followed by radiotherapy (RT). Follow-up 15 months after surgery reveals no evidence of persistent tumor or distant metastases. These patients need long follow-up since they frequently appear with distant metastases many years after treatment.
