Abstract

Objective: To characterize the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) activity in the Pediatric Emergency Department.

Material and methods: Data related to Coimbra Pediatric Hospital during the year of 2009. Number of patients seen, their distribution and the most frequent pathologies were analyzed.

Results: 4571 children were found with a ENT pathology diagnose. 1573 children were observated by an ENT physician. February (155 cases) and monday (18%) were the busiest periods. Most of them were males (55.09%) and were between 1-5 years (50.58%). The primary diagnosis was framed in the pathology of mouth / pharynx / larynx (49.6%), ear disease (43.5%) and pathology of the nose (6.9%).

Conclusion: The study highlights the need of publishing results to compare realities, as well as notice that part of ENT pathology is evaluated by non ENT doctors or part of the activity is not recorded.
