Abstract

Objectives: To determine the incidence of complications of endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) in a hospital centre with 20 years of experience.

Study design: Retrospective review of 667 patients who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery.

Materials and methods: The clinical data of the patients who were submitted to ESS between January of 2006 and December 2009, were reviewed, and the per and post-operative complications were evaluated, with a minimum follow-up period of 3 months.

Results: The incidence of complications in 677 surgeries was 7,39% (5,91% minor and 1,48% major). The complications were related to the extent of the surgical procedure, being more frequent in revision cases and with the presence and grade of nasal poliposis.

Conclusions: Two decades after the general acceptance of the ESS, it is still not a risk free procedure. It is imperative to have profound anatomical knowledge and a correct surgical planning, based on an imagiologic analysis, in order to keep the number of complications to a minimum.
