Abstract

Objective: To review our experience in the surgical management of acute mastoiditis.

Materials and Methods: A retrospective study of 23 patients (13 males and 10 females) under 15 years surgically treated for acute mastoiditis between January 2002 and February 2009. Analyzed variables were epidemiological, laboratory and clinics.

Results: Mean age at presentation 34.4 months. Increased frequency on the right side, 15 cases (65.2%). History of OMA: 47.8%. Retro- Auricular erythema 91.3%, the tumor 95.65%, displacement of the ear 86.96% and 30.04% fluctuation. CT was performed in 100%. Streptococcus pneumoniae was the most common germ (41.1%). 100% of the cases were treated with intravenous antibiotic therapy and surgery. Two complications.

Conclusions: Acute Mastoiditis in children is a disease with a significant impact on our environment. Computed tomography is indispensable for the therapeutic choice. Surgical treatment may prevent the development of further complications.
