Abstract

Introduction: The ectopic thyroid is a rare disorder which incidence ranges from 1 / 3000 to 1 / 10000. The dual location of ectopic thyroid is even a more rare entity. The pathogenesis is uncertain. The most common ectopic location is in the base of the tongue, but they could be also found in cervical ganglia, in sub-mandibular glands and in the trachea. The authors present a case of double ectopic thyroid location: lingual and sub-mandibular.

Methods: Presentation of case report.

Results: Patient of 60 years old with complaints of dysphagia and sensation of swelling at the base of the tongue. Following the completion of additional tests the diagnosis of dual ectopic thyroid location (sub-lingual and mandibular) was placed. The patient was submitted to total excision of the two lesions and is clinically well.

Conclusion: The presence of ectopic thyroid tissue should be a diagnosis to consider in cervical masses and the base of the tongue. This entity is often asymptomatic and appears to be more prevalent in the general population than the rare cases reported make us believe. Only a proper orientation of the cervical masses diagnoses may lead to a correct treatment, avoiding iatrogenesis
