Abstract

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are, isolated or associated, one of the most common surgical procedures in ENT practice. Surgical  indications,  formerly  almost  exclusively  related  to infection, comprehend, more and more for the last 40 years, obstructive pathology of the upper airway and upper digestive system. Infection and obstruction are intimately related and coexist with frequency in the same patient, being the cause of serious diminution of life quality and potencially conditioning serious local and systemic sequelae.

There is some resistence to adeno-tonsillectomy; it is claimed that it can be associated with an increase in the incidence of allergies or systemic infections.

Recent studies refute those ideas and confirm the benefit of the surgery, regarding improvement of life quality, reduction of comorbidities and persistence of the results in long-term follow-up.
