Laryngeal and Ocular Kaposi's sarcoma: The initial manifestation of HIV

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) manifestations are varied. While Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) remains the most common neoplasm in patients with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), it is rarely its initial manifestation. Laryngeal and ocular involvement in the absence of skin lesions occurs infrequently.
We present the case of a 32-year-old patient with no known comorbidities, who had odynophagia of one month duration and episodes of recurrent subconjunctival hemorrhage. We noticed a supraglottic vegetating lesion and a second subconjunctival lesion.
Diagnostic work-up confirmed the diagnosis of KS associated with HIV infection. He started antiretroviral therapy and chemotherapy, eventually dying after six months due to successive complications. KS, rare as the initial presentation of AIDS, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of masses in atypical locations.
