Abstract

Introduction: Eccrine porocarcinoma is a rare malignant cutaneous neoplasia that arises from an eccrine sweat gland.

Case report: We describe the clinical case of an 83-year-old man sent for observation by the Head and Neck Surgery group, presenting a painless, growing tumefaction of the right parotid region. The patient had been submitted to a cutaneous excisional biopsy of the same region 14 months before that revealed a squamous cell carcinoma. Managed as a parotid neoplasia, after appropriate diagnostic workup, a superficial parotidectomy was performed. The histopathological analysis revealed an eccrine porocarcinoma as the diagnosis.

Discussion/Conclusion: An eccrine porocarcinoma does not have any clinicopathological specific criteria, and the histological analysis of a specimen frequently leads to diagnosis of a squamous cell carcinoma. With the description of this clinical case we aim to raise awareness of fellow ENT doctors to this rare entity, and substantiate the importance of a close relationship with the pathologist in minimizing misdiagnosis.
