Abstract

Objectives: To resume the main characteristics of corticosteroids and discuss the main clinical applications of systemic corticotherapy in Otorhinolaryngology.

Design: Literature review.

Material and methods: Pubmed search of articles concerning systemic corticosteroids. Studies with clinical relevance to clinical practice in Otorhinolaryngology were selected and analysis concluded in april/2020.

Results and conclusions: The systemic action of corticosteroids is due to its intracellular activity and is associated to adverse effects that are dose, time and route of administration dependent. Corticosteroids differ in terms of anti-inflammatory activity, duration of action and presence of mineralocorticoid effect. The use of corticosteroids varies among Otolaryngologists and it is apparently related to one’s experience. The prescription of systemic corticotherapy must be strict and individualized, taking into account the disease, patient comorbidities and pharmacological properties of each corticosteroid.
