Abstract

The nose is a central structure for the harmony of the face. Most of the development of the nose and face occurs during embryogenesis, between 4 and 8 weeks. Although this process occurs to a large extent at the onset of embryogenesis, the neonate's nose is in many aspects different from the adult's nose as significant changes in the septal cartilage, upper lateral cartilages, nasal pyramid and middle third of the face will occur throughout growth. In addition, the structures that constitute the nose undergo degenerative changes. The authors aim to review and systematize the mechanisms underlying nose growth and establish the implications these have for nasal surgery.
