Abstract

Otitis Media (OM) is an inflammatory process of the middle ear with several subtypes - acute otitis media (AOM), otitis media with effusion (OME) and chronic otitis media (COM). Due to the lack of health care in developing countries, OM continues to be underdiagnosed. Objectives: to identify the frequency of the pathology and its subtypes and to recognize the main risk factors responsible for OM in the Cape Verdean population. Methods: We evaluated 52 patients, including children and adults. We performed a clinical history and otoscopy of all patients. Results: We found significant differences between the diagnosis of OM and sociodemographic factors. We found that the relative frequency of OMA was 7.7%, OME was 13.5% and suppurative COM was 13.5%. We evaluated an association between individuals with OM and risk factors. Conclusions: Recurrent respiratory infections were the main risk factor for OM in this country.
