Abstract

Objective: To describe the natural history, treatment and prognosis of patients with the diagnosis of sinonasal melanoma in a Portuguese oncological referral center.

Study design: Retrospective database review.

Material & methods: The clinical records of patients with the diagnosis of sinonasal mucosal melanoma who underwent treatment between 2005 and 2016 in Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa Francisco Gentil were reviewed.

Results: A total of 19 patients were included, 12 female and 7 male. Mean age was 73 years and the more frequent initial symptoms were nasal obstruction and nasal bleeding. All patients had involvement of the nasal fossae and 53% had simultaneous sinus involvement. The maxillary sinus was the most affected (53%). Most patients had T4a (53%) and were treated with surgery (83%). A total of 64% patients had recurrence, 32% local and 32% metastatic, most frequently in lung and liver. Overall survival after recurrence was 5 months and disease free survival was 24 months. The median overall survival was 34 months and the 3 year overall survival was 47%. The overall survival at 3 years was significantly diminished in advanced T stages (P=0.01).
