Abstract

Objectives: Determine computed tomography (CT) charecteristics in chronic otitis media (COM) with or whitout cholesteatoma, and its association with intraoperative findings.

Methods: Observational study that included patients followed in Professor Doutor Fernando Fonseca Hospital, between 2011 and 2020. COM diagnosis was made based in medical history and phisical examination, confirmed with ear surgery. All patients were submited to preoperative ear CT scan.

Results: The prevalence of COM without cholesteatoma was 65,9% of patients and COM with cholesteatoma in the rest. There were significant statistic differences between patients with COM without cholesteatoma versus with cholesteatoma in erosion in the ossicular chain, Fallopian canal, scutum and lateral semicircular canal. We found concordance in 87,6% between CT and intraoperative findings.

Conclusion: CT scan is na complementary exam in preoperative planning that can help in diferencial diagnosis of COM.
