Vocal Cord Leukoplakia: Malignant Predictor?

Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze clinical and anatomopathological factors and their relationship with recurrence or malignancy in patients with vocal cords leukoplakia. A retrospective analysis of the clinical files of patients undergoing laryngeal microsurgery for excision of leukoplakia from vocal cords was performed between 2017 and 2019. The study sample consisted of 56 patients, 54 male and 2 female, with a mean age of 61.6 ± 6.9 years-old. The degree of dysplasia and the extent of leukoplakia revealed statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in the Fisher test and the X2 test in both the risk of malignancy and the risk of recurrence after surgery. There were no other statistically significant differences to report. These results suggest that the extent of leukoplakia and the degree of dysplasia could be predictive factors for the risk of malignancy and recurrence.
