Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The files for submission are in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice or RTF format (as long as they do not exceed 8MB) and mandatorily according to the submission model.
  • Addresses (URLs or DOIs) for bibliographic references were provided when available.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; uses italics instead of underlining (except URL addresses); figures and tables are inserted in the text, not at the end of the document in the form of attachments.
  • The text follows the style standards and bibliographic requirements described in Authors Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

The preparation of manuscripts must comply with the rules stated in the Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals, JAMA 1997; 277:927-34. This document is available at www.icmje.org.

Authors must submit the articles in the submission form in an editable format in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice or RTF (as long as they do not exceed 8MB) and mandatorily according to the submission model and its instructions.

The Abstract must be structured in Portuguese, French or Spanish and also in English (maximum 150 words) with the following sequence: Objectives, Study Design, Material and Methods, Results and Conclusions. In clinical cases, the case will be described in an abbreviated form.

The text of the manuscript (maximum 12 numbered pages) should also be divided into: Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions (one paragraph only), Acknowledgments, Bibliographic References (maximum of 25 citations). Clinical cases will be structured in: Introduction, Description of the Case (s), Discussion and References         

References must follow Vancouver standards. Authors must be cited up 6; if more than 6 the first 6 are mentioned followed by et al.

References must be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are mentioned in the text. References must be identified in the list of Bibliographic References by arabic numbers, and in the text of the article by numbers in superscript without parentheses. Articles accepted but not yet published must be designated (in press). The information contained in manuscripts not yet accepted must be registered with (unpublished observations).

The titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the abbreviation NLM accessible at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nlmcatalog.

The Illustrations and the respective Legends of the Figures or Tables must be inserted in the submitted document, with numbering according to the entry in the text. When publishing the work, a version of the figures or tables may be requested separately, as supplementary documents (JPEG, TIFF, PDF, Word, Excel, Powerpoint formats).

Articles that include experimentation on humans must mention the authorization of the local Ethics Committee and respect for the 1975 Helsinki Declaration and its 1983 review. Animal experiments must also indicate the respective opinion of the local Ethics Committee.
