Abstract

Aims: To analyze a case series of laryngeal papillomatosis (LP) at Hospital Garcia de Orta. To review the surgical and adjuvant treatment currently in use.

Methods: Retrospective study of LP cases diagnosed between 2009 and 2014. Epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic parameters analysis.

Results: There were 17 cases of LP, predominantly male (88,2%) with a mean age of 60,6±9,2 years. Addictions of 82% on tobacco and 47% on ethanol were found. Most frequent preoperative symptom was dysphonia in 88% of cases. Recurrence rate was 43,8%, with first recurrence mean time of 13 months, being the laryngeal microsurgery with cold removal the initial approach of choice (75%). In 3 cases there was evolution to squamous-cell carcinoma.

Conclusions: LP has a recurrent behaviour. Surgical treatment remains the gold standard in management of this disease, with a new trend toward microdebridor. It is crucial to increase time between relapses considering the adjuvant therapeutic currently available.
